These can range from simple growth of the body to wild and disproportionate sizes. Magic can be simple from potions and spells, to large and grand acts that are complex and have many steps. While the use of magic can be used in fantasy settings and can be viewed as an easy work around, it doesn't mean that the use of magic can be used in modern settings as well as an easy way for the writer and reader to understand what is going on.

POTIONS
Potions are one of the simplest ways to cause expansion. A simple drink, gulp and down the throat, potions are easy to start growth and as well as a way to control growth as well. One can simply brew up or purchase potions for cheap and getting one to drink it can be a cause of curiosity or as a prank. Potions that cause growth can be scaled not that much as they can be considered a way to induce small to medium changes in a person. For example, a character wants to find out what effects a potion can cause and once drunk they can experience growth that may or may not immobilize them from their bodies, but not disproportionate or city breaking.

SPELLS
Spells are more complex and have a better effect for non stopping growth and even growth that can cause major damage to the surrounding areas. Spells need a bit more time to prepare and can be very easy to mess up and cause more issues later on the road. For example, a spell is used and at first everything is normal, a small increase in size, but later one it is discovered that something went wrong in the casting and causes the user to feel the effects of more massive changes and causing untold issues. Spells are also a good way for people to prank others and cause the receiving side of the spell to be in situations where their own growth causes issues. Usually spells used for pranks can be used for fun and not to harm the person growing from it but it can lead to issues where the person who the spell was casted on can find issues with unintended growth and size issues.

CRUSES
A curse in expansion is something where the holder of the curse has little to no control over its effects and causes. In a story, curses can be a defining point of a character and how they react to the world around them, being careful along the way to make sure that their curse does not activate due to factors in their adventures. In expansion stories, a curse can have the effects of one's body growing and changing all of the sudden or over the course of time and can be difficult for the character to do much. Usually, curses cannot be removed but they can be managed by friends, other people, artifacts, and even the character taking care to not create environments that cause the curse to activate.

ARTIFACTS
Artifacts can come in many different shapes and sizes, and in expansion stories they all can either hold back growth or be the cause of it. From small trinkets that can be worn as jewelry, to idols and statues that can be from long lost civilizations that cause growth and expansion from taking it or disturbing it from its place of rest. Jewelry that has magic can be used to control a curse or be the cause of unintended growth and expansion.
While some might see magic has a quick and cheap way to cause expansion and can be seen as weak writing. Other times a good magic system can bring life into a story and be a great way for a sense of continuity to a series and bring wild ways of expansion.
